Forklift Steering Valve - A valve is a device which controls the flow of a fluid like for instance slurries, fluidized gases or regular gases, liquids, by partially obstructing, opening or closing certain passageways. Valves are normally pipe fittings but are typically discussed as a separate category. In instances where an open valve is concerned, fluid flows in a direction from higher to lower pressure.

Various applications like for instance residential, transport, commercial, military and industrial industries make use of valves. Some of the main businesses which depend on valves include the mining, chemical manufacturing, power generation, water reticulation, sewerage and oil and gas sector.

Most valves being utilized in everyday activities are plumbing valves, that are utilized in taps for tap water. Other popular valves include types fitted to washing machines and dishwashers, gas control valves on cookers, valves within car engines and safety devices fitted to hot water systems. In nature, veins in the human body act as valves and control the blood circulation. Heart valves also control the circulation of blood in the chambers of the heart and maintain the correct pumping action.

Valves can be worked in various ways. Like for instance, they can be operated either by a pedal, a lever or a handle. Valves can be driven by changes in temperature, pressure or flow or they could be automatic. These changes could act upon a piston or a diaphragm which in turn activates the valve. Some popular examples of this type of valve are seen on safety valves or boilers fitted to hot water systems.

There are more complex control systems utilizing valves that require automatic control which is based on external input. For example, regulating flow through a pipe to a changing set point. These situations generally require an actuator. An actuator would stroke the valve depending on its set-up and input, allowing the valve to be positioned accurately while enabling control over different needs.
